Beginning with Arnold van Gennep's (1960) analysis of rites of passage, and the ways in which these have been discussed by Edmund Leach (1961), this entry goes on to look at the ways in which the liminality of such rites' middle stage has been elaborated upon and differentiated from modern liminoid phenomena by Victor Turner. The usefulness of the concepts of liminality and the liminoid is illustrated through reference to certain ways in which they have been applied in the study of contemporary activities
