Languages that descend from a common ancestor can be grouped together into language families . This entry discusses the major issues involved in establishing such linguistic genetic relations, including subdividing language families into subgroups and connecting established language families to larger macro‐families (also known as phyla or stocks). The major methods used by historical linguists to relate languages are assessed, as are the uses of lexical reconstruction to locate the homelands of and date non‐written ancestor languages (proto‐languages). Finally, some of the major language families from around the world are presented and overviewed
