Participant observation (a mainstay of ethnography, fieldwork, and field research) is a method of study whereby the researcher becomes immersed in the ebb and flow of the phenomenon being investigated. The participant observer may be overt or covert and perform a variety of passive and active roles, including membership, aimed at securing rapport and acquiring truthful information about the lifeways of societal members. Records of the participant observer's experiences and observations provide highly detailed descriptions and interpretations of social life. Participant observational studies are among the most enduring and frequently cited, and there is an extremely rich and growing body of such literature in sociology and many other fields today
