The gender balance of the health professions is both a product of and a potential challenge to gender systems. Anthropological investigations of gender in health care highlight some key issues: the status and authority associated with healing roles; the intersection of gender with other forms of hierarchy in medical systems; and the cultural and economic power of medical workers in different cultural and historical contexts
