American sociologists studying race and sports often focus on: (1) racial differences in access to sports; (2) differences in how various racial groups are represented in sports; and (3) racial differences in the treatment of sports participants. (Similar processes operate globally but are not addressed here due to space constraints.) Although a number of barriers to diverse sports participation have diminished, differences in representation across racial groups and specific sports persist among athletes, management, owners, and sports viewers and via team names and mascots. Further, treatment within sports contexts differs by racial group in accordance with prevailing stereotypes and discriminatory norms
