Legal language is a powerful form of discourse that constructs and reproduces sociolegal institutions, relationships, and epistemologies. The linguistic details of legal language are understood as constituting and reflecting broader power relations, social structures, and institutions. While much legal language scholarship focuses on formal law, many researchers have investigated the linguistic terrain of conflict management and dispute processing in less formal contexts. Studies of legal language are interdisciplinary. Methods used include ethnography, conversation and discourse analysis, narrative, and formal linguistic analysis
