This entry outlines processes whereby gender has become a key concept in the analysis of relations between men and women in anthropology. It explores the disciplinary development of the study of gender, initially under the auspices of the “anthropology of women” and feminist anthropology, but also encompassing a wide set of intersections with other categories, concepts, and issues. It charts the early definition and analysis of gender in terms of the sex/gender model, in which gender was considered a cultural construct overlaid on a biological “sex.” The entry traces subsequent propositions that sex is also socially constituted, and the ways in which anthropologists have sought to ethnographically demonstrate the generation of gender through actions, practices, and performances that give rise to sexed and gendered bodies. The entry also discusses intersections of sex and gender in terms of anthropological studies on masculinities, sexualities, religion, colonialism, and nation‐states
