Gaze is a visible index of attention and therefore serves critical functions for language users in social interaction. Though gaze behavior necessarily interlocks with other conduct like concurrently produced speech, gestural movements, and the arrangement of bodies, research on gaze as a topic in itself is robust, especially within conversation analysis. This entry provides a brief history of gaze research as it emerged from work on nonverbal communication. It then gives an overview of how gaze operates in social interactions, focusing in particular on entering interaction, regulating participation, and gaze as social action. It concludes with observations on current trends in research on gaze in interaction
