Esther Hermitte was the first Argentine scholar who graduated in social anthropology. Her MA and PhD at the University of Chicago (1962, 1964) resulted from her research on social control through nahualism and sorcery in the Tzeltal Chiapas highlands. After her return to Argentina, she focused on social inequality both in cooperative organizations of small poncho weavers and paprika producers in the Argentine northwest and also in the subaltern integration of Chaco Aborigines in the Northeast
