Louis Hjelmslev (1899–1965) was an important linguist and semiotician who linked together several strands of language scholarship from Saussure to Chomsky to Halliday. Hjelmslev attempted to transform linguistics from purely an exercise in technical analysis into a broad inquiry into the interplay between language and all of human culture and society. In this sense, Hjelmslev anticipated some of the directions formal sociolinguistics would take in the 1960s
