L.T. Hobhouse became the first chair in sociology at the London School of Economics in 1907. In the tradition of T.H. Green and J.S. Mill, he continued to blend sociology and philosophy and remained committed to a normative approach to science and not to value neutrality. He was a public moralist who argued on various levels of thought and contributed to public as well as academic debates. In effect Hobhouse is well known as a theorist of a new liberalism.
