Karl Polanyi was a social philosopher, economic historian, and economic anthropologist who formulated a substantivist theory of economy and a classification of economic systems according to their forms of integration. His key concepts of reciprocity and redistribution have been absorbed into economic anthropology. His analysis of the emergence of a market‐dominated society and its social, political, and moral consequences has a lasting relevance
