Heteroglossia is a concept which is fundamentally concerned with two central but seemingly contradictory aspects of language: its fixedness (e.g. script, lexicon, grammar system) and its inherent variability due to the ways in which context can add to, subtract from, and alter the meaning of the language produced (spoken, signed, written). Thus, all language is said to have multiple possible voices and interpretations. Context is always at work and must be given attention to understand the array of possible meanings present in any given text
