Medical genetics is concerned with improving human health through the diagnosis, risk assessment, and management of human genetic disease. Genetic screening refers to the protocols and technologies for ascertaining risks for medical conditions with known genetic causes or contributions. The emerging anthropology of these practices offers a commentary on processes of clinical diagnosis and expertise, on the social settings of policies and practices of genetic screening, and on the personal, social, and political meanings of being identified as “at risk” in local and national contexts. Through ethnography and cross‐cultural comparison, it contributes to the growing social science and ethics literature on geneticization and medicalization, risk perception and risk acceptability, biosociality and community genetics, disability, and stigma
