Although the role of participant might appear to be self‐evident in the analysis of social interaction, it is anything but. It might seem tempting to count the individuals present at any given encounter and view them as participants; however, Erving Goffman deconstructed the roles of speaker and hearer in a way that showed laminated forms of participation within any ostensible interlocutor and across interactions. Subsequent scholarship has tracked how interlocutors constitute participation roles in emergent interactions. Multimodal and intertextual approaches furthermore demonstrate the importance of tracking potentially competing involvements across a range of semiotic modes in a way that does not take for granted the categorical roles offered by Goffman's initial work
