Anthropological linguistics is the study of language as a cultural phenomenon, and it therefore emphasizes the role that culture plays in human language and languages. It has a long history and can trace its theoretical base back to philology, an eighteenth‐century precursor of modern linguistics. However, its history has also included a period, in the second half of the twentieth century, when it was seen as having minimal relevance for both anthropology and linguistics. From the 1990s onward, increasing knowledge of how human brains and human societies work has allowed anthropological linguistics to reposition itself as one of the voices of anthropology within linguistics. It now covers a range of topics: descriptive linguistics, evolutionary linguistics, language origins, linguistic relativity, aspects of nonhuman communication, and aspects of the psychology of language use. These topics all share an emphasis on language and communication as a cultural activity
