Medicinal plants as a concept is essentially based on etic perspectives. Anthropologists have drawn attention to the need for a multidimensional approach to the food–medicine interface, but research on medicinal plants is generally embedded in pharmacological and phytochemical research. The development of both new health foods and new medicines is now embedded in a complex legal and social framework based on international agreements derived from the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) (Rio de Janeiro, 1992). A more integrated approach can be of particular relevance in tackling the fast‐changing health problems associated the global paradox of simultaneous over‐ and undernutrition (starvation)
