Antonio Gramsci was a political activist and cofounder of the Italian Communist Party, who died persecuted by Mussolini's fascist regime. He is best known for his Prison Notebooks , which he wrote over the eleven years that he spent in fascist detention as a political prisoner. In numerous short essays, he developed his views about hegemony and resistance, which represent an early attempt to inject more social and cultural considerations about power and exploitation into classic Marxist thinking
