Anthropological research on diabetes has paralleled the emergence of the disease in biomedicine. Most anthropological research on diabetes has attended to social inequalities among vulnerable populations with type 2 diabetes in North and Central America, with a small but increasing number of publications on diabetes emergence and experiences in low‐ and middle‐income countries. Most research on diabetes has taken a critical approach, examining explanatory models, access to care, acculturation, and structural violence. More recently, biocultural anthropologists have begun to measure diabetes within the body in clinical and epidemiological models, motivated by increasing recognition of the roles of epigenetics and social stress in disease causality. With an increasing focus on how social inequalities get under the skin, diabetes research provides future opportunities to study political–economic and health transitions, evolutionary medicine, and cross‐disciplinary perspectives on health and healing. Indeed, diabetes as a subject of scholarship provides opportunities for anthropologists to speak to those in applied fields, from policy to medicine
