Control variables are variables included in multivariate analyses to identify spurious associations to strengthen causal inferences. These extraneous variables, also known as confounders, are specified neither as the independent variables nor as the dependent variables in the hypothesis; however, because they correlate highly with both the independent variables and the dependent variables, leaving them out of the model could lead to a misestimation of the effect of the independent variables. Therefore, in assessing whether X causes Y , it is important to examine whether the covariation between them persists after the effects of other variables on this association are removed. A variable is controlled for when its influence on the other variables in the model is held constant
