The bell is a generic term for different kinds of percussion, idiophone, instruments, struck with either a clapper or a stick. Bells are used in religious, secular, ritual, or everyday contexts to summon people, control activities, make urgent announcements, commemorate important events, celebrate and create all kinds of collectivities. Historians and anthropologists have studied the significance that various societies and cultures accord to the sounding of bells in their pursuit of a sense of place and belonging in symbolic communities
