This study addresses the complex evolution of the multispecies family in Colombia, exploring the boundaries of legal recognition and the delicate balance of rights between humans and animals. Through a qualitative documentary analysis and a teleological legal hermeneutic approach, spe-cialized doctrine, legislation, and recent jurisprudence are triangulated to fully understand this phenomenon. The findings reveal a marked judicial tension: while lower courts and dissenting opinions advocate direct recognition of the family category, the Constitutional Court maintains a prudent, anthropocentric stance. Its approach protects the affective bond indirectly, relying on the caregiver’s fundamental rights—such as the free development of personality and intimacy—while rejecting, for now, the constitu-tional redefinition of the family concept. Furthermore, a critical procedural void regarding custody disputes is identified. It is concluded that legal evolution will not lead to a new dogmatic family category, but rather toward a pragmatic protection of the bond (custody and maintenance) grounded in animal welfare. As an original contribution, we propose transitioning from rigid anthropocentrism to a ‘relational responsibility’ model, where animal sentience acts as an ethical and legal limit to property rights.
