Between 1974 and 1976, Manuel Puig chose Mexico as his destination for his exile. Banned in Argentina and deprived of his primary audience, he focused on inserting himself into the local cultural scene through numerous literary and dramatic endeavors that evoked Mexican culture. This part of his work was dubbed by critics as the "Mexican Cycle" and includes scripts, plots, stories, musicals, and novels produced during or immediately after his stay, while he maintained contact with the country through sporadic visits from New York to complete commissioned writing work. Among the Mexican projects preserved in his archive is Gratas Veladas de Sociedad (1975), a story about the relationship between a mother and son who must hide his homosexuality for the sake of their upper-class social position.
