This article analyzes the speech delivered by Jair Messias Bolsonaro on September 7, 2021, onAvenida Paulista in São Paulo. Based on a qualitative methodology of a critical-interpretative nature, grounded in Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and in the transitivity system of SystemicFunctional Grammar for lexicogrammatical analysis, the study identifies discursive strategies employed by the then President of the Republic of Brazil. The results revealed a higher recurrenceof material processes, followed by relational processes. From this perspective, it is observed thatBolsonaro’s discourse adopted argumentative strategies that describe, in a catastrophic manner, ascenario that, according to him, prevents him from governing. Emphasis is placed on two enemies, both linked to democratic institutions: state governors and Alexandre de Moraes, a justice of theBrazilian Supreme Court. In this sense, the analysis reveals how the lexicogrammatical configuration of presidential discourse operates in the production of an antagonistic logic aimed at thedelegitimization of institutional actors.
