Scholars and researchers read books and articles whose topics align with the research and theory interests of their main area of work. Hence, within sociology ethnomethodologists tend to read other ethnomethodologists, feminists other feminists, and functionalists other functionalists. Likewise, small group researchers read a lot about small groups, and network theorists consume much of their time reading and ruminating over networks. The reality of sociology being a multiparadigmatic science contributes to the maintenance of a fractured and differentiated cognitive space within the discipline. As Jack Gibbs argued years ago, there is no central concept for sociology (although he argued that control could be that central concept). Hence, while some sociologists are dutifully pursuing the project of a scientific sociology following the protocols of positivistic methods, others view sociology as overtly political, artistic, interpretive, reformist, humanitarian, or some combination of these. Possessing a big tent, sociology provides institutional legitimacy for the multiple theory groups and projects pursued by its practitioners.
