This paper accounts for the birth of a disease-related consumers' association, bringing together parents of children who are patients on a specialist paediatric ward and are subjected to parenteral nutrition at home. We attempt to show how the analysis of the production of technological-medical innovation permitting the transfer of care from hospital to home elucidates the process leading up to the birth of the group. We interpret this process as a two-phase development in the ward: the introductory stage, in which social innovations go hand in hand with the technological invention, bringing about a reshuffling of layman-professional relationships; and the restructuring stage, starting when the former phase is re-defined and designated as anarchic, and in which the old structure re-emerges. We argue that the setting up of a parents' association is a reaction to the re-establishment of order following a period of order undone
