This article elaborates upon George Steiner's description of the 'dual phenomenology' of social relations: their 'common surface and private base'. A flow of articulate consciousness informs the routine contours and structures of social life, belying notions of common world-view or collective life-world. An analytical tension must be sustained between a social structure and its personalization. The article argues that the consciousness of the artist provides an exemplary case study by which to explore, in exaggerated form, the phenomenology of social relations within the life-world of the individual actor. The artistic output of the English painter and diarist Stanley Spencer is focused on in order to outline an existential approach to social relations via intentionality
