Archives de l'archologie europenne', Les Nouvelles de l'Archologie 110 (2007), 3-64, published in French, as well as a number of conferences.The project website (http://www.area-archives.org)promises further publications with the same publishing house, and these are to be welcomed.These essays are part of a new history of archaeology: no longer, as one contributor emphasizes, perhaps unfairly, the hobby of retired archaeologists, but a vital agenda for understanding the practice of archaeology itself.Archives, not unlike the deposition of other material culture, provide an arguably more 'veridical' representation of the archaeological process than the final publications which propose purified schemata of the development of archaeology.The investigation of these archives reveals the idea-formation processes of archaeologists as they systematize their thoughts into coherent balanced models of data and interpretation.An interesting question is
