Asian women writers in the twentieth century were and continue to be marginalized first by gender. In addition, in nations where national identity has been forcibly equated with a national-language policy, the choice of writing in English is another reason for marginalization. And if the writer happens to be a member of a minority ethnic or regional group, she is further marginalized by the prevailing majority ethnic power structures. The author examines the work, problems and prospects of Asian women writers against this background. Her recollection of past experiences in Malaysia lends imaginative force to her comments and valuations. Some of the significant issues related to writing creatively in English in Asian countries are here examined from a feminist perspective
