In the new collection, Precarious Rhetorics, the editors are committed to “bear[ing] witness to increasing and increasingly harsh restrictions on movement and mobility of entire populations and the politically induced causes and precarious conditions of displacement and dispossession” (p. 2). This inaugural collection in The Ohio State University Press’s new series, “New Directions in Rhetoric and Materiality,” provides compelling examinations of a variety of issues of dispossession, including sexual violence, racial violence, disability, displacement, mobility, labor, and technological access, to name a few. With contributions from established and emerging scholars in rhetoric and communication, the editors seek to address the materiality of precarity and to highlight not only authoritarian regimes’ impact on precarity, but also to point to the limits of “liberal internationalism” (p. 2). The editors not only engage with “the discourses and material of the global Right, but also with the precarity of liberal internationalism in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century” (p. 2). Using “concepts of precarity, precaritization, and precariousness” (p. 2) as their theoretical lenses, the chapters in the volume work toward understanding the structures of inequality impacting a variety of material conditions.
