A structural model of the aging of 816 suburban populations is explicated and found only partially to be supported by the data. A procedure for examining the effects of various suburban characteristics on change in age structure components and ultimately on an aging measure is described. The age structures of suburban populations persist over the short term but changes that do occur can be explained to some extent by changes in a suburb's ecological position within the metropolis
