Survey research, voting behavior, and participant observation of the world-wide Society of Jesus (Jesuits) indicate differing trends of religious life and practice. Delegates to the highest Jesuit legislature and a sample of Jesuit non-delegates from around the world show a factor-score polarity between traditional and modernized positions on change, values, social action, ministry and theological position. These styles illustrate clearly differing value survey profiles and contrasts in voting behavior on Jesuit legislation. On the basis of these differences, social differentiation is hypothesized as having taken place within the Society of Jesus in its prescriptive culture. The polarity is formed of changed and unchanged styles. The unchanged, undiffer-entiated style, Bulwark-Catholicism, is the style of the tradition of defender of the faith and reflects strong hierarchical and doctrinal structures of Catholicism in the mode of the Council of Trent. The changed, differentiated style, Concili-Humanism, reflects the modern hrmanist tradition in the mode of the Second Vatican Council and the vast experimentation and dissolution of structures that have occurred since that Council
