Risk Concerns among Latino Farmers in Missouri

Farm risks have always been part of agriculture. As farmers have more opportunities to increase income from agriculture, their risks also increase. Because Latinos are the fastest growing minorities entering farming in the United States, this article explores their attitudes toward farm risks. Acknowledging that Latino farmers are a diverse group, the paper introduces some characteristics of Latino farmers in Missouri compared with Anglo farmers. Using a survey and in-person interviews, the article addresses Latino farmers' risk attitudes. The low response rate to the survey constrains a full and valid statistical analysis; however, cross-tabulations and the in-person interviews serve to analyze Latino farmers' risk attitudes. Results show that production and financial risk seemed to be most concerning for the participant Latino farmers.
