Central to applied linguistics, discourse analysis explores how language works in relation to particular social contexts, revealing the way meanings are conveyed, relationships established, and interactions managed, so mediates between linguistics and language use (Hyland 2013). All these are essential for developing effective communication strategies in various fields like education, business, and social services, but the rapid development of communication technologies and changing ways of knowledge exchange are bringing up new contexts in which discourse can be best analysed. Therefore, The Bloomsbury Handbook of Discourse Analysis is a timely collection of research areas, approaches, and directions of discourse analysis contributed by key scholars in each of the above-mentioned domains. This edited volume represents a rebranded second edition of The Bloomsbury Companion to Discourse Analysis, initially published with Continuum in 2011 and renamed in 2013 to the current title. The new edition not only updates existing material from the first edition but also expands and reorganizes the content. Consequently, the volume now comprises three parts. The first part focuses on methods of analysis, featuring chapters that explore and describe the principal approaches and issues in researching discourse. The second part provides an overview and discussion of several key areas that have traditionally been central to discourse studies, addressing the primary methods of investigation and key findings. The third section explores some of the directions in which discourse analysis seems to be heading. Each chapter includes a case study that illustrates the discussed points and offers resources for further reading.
