In La ciudad y los perros by Mario Vargas Llosa, dominance as a central theme coupled with the constant preocupation of the male characters with not seeming to be female suggests an analysis of the novel in the light of Demaris Wehr's views on Carl Jung's theory of the anima and Ariel Dorfman's observations on violence in the Spanish American novel. Wehr finds in Jung a (con)fusion of an image, the anima, with women, persons fulfilling societal roles, and furthermore believes that this intermingling is a common phenomenon. Such a merger is to be found in La ciudad y los perros, both in the implied author and in the minds of the principal male characters.1
