The Protocols of Zion, first published in English over 70 years ago, has often been identified as the most serious anti‐Semitic piece of writing of the pre‐Nazi era. In this article, the reception of the English version is analysed in detail and put into its context of journalistic attitudes and responses to the ‘Jewish Question’ in post‐First World War Britain. The conclusion is that, at least in this setting, the work made little significant impact and thus suggests a somewhat limited appeal for such writings.
