Cooking instructions directed at men argue not only that men cook (and eat) fundamentally differently than women, but also that they can preserve or demonstrate their masculinity through the act of cooking-as long as they follow the right recipe.Cooking instructions for men premiered in the 1890s and still have a strong following in the 2020s in print as well as on YouTube and Instagram.Traditionally, manly cooking served to naturalize an increasingly eroding gender binary by prescribing performative acts of cooking such as grilling meat, showcooking gourmet food, or preparing a meal for sexual conquest promising elevated masculine capital.Ideas of what constitutes manly cooking, however, changed over time. This article looks at the most recent iterations of manly cooking in cookbooks and digital media. The article argues that the focus on the muscular male body and its production through high-protein foods as well as the social media trend of cooking in the wilderness favors ideals of masculinity that are surprisingly conservative. However, "This Is My Recipe to Get Big" explores how these texts that anchor masculinity in muscle and survival discourses also create rare spaces to reflect on men's eating disorders and mental health issues.
