The responsibilities of the architect, engineer, and the utility in selecting the type of containment for a nuclear steam supply are presented. The Atomic Energy Commission's role in the design and construction of a nuclear facility is described. Reasons are given for using prestressed concrete and the post-tensioning systems that are available in the United States, along with loading conditions and the analytical techniques used in design. Reasons for using the unbonded tendon, and construction details for a pressurized water reactor containment vessel and the prestressed concrete reactor vessel for a high temperature gas cooled reactor are included.
