The author discusses the paradoxical place of ethnographic fieldwork and of the location of anthropological knowledge in a discipline self-defined as universal and devoted to study the social-cultural diversity of Humanity. By means of her own academic trajectory in several stances of her ethnographic practice, Guber shows how fieldwork struggles to make its way amidst the written reflections on how we do anthropology away of metropolitan settings
