This chapter examines key writings in animal studies from 2013 to 2014 that reflect the diverse and interdisciplinary nature of the field. Although questions concerning animals are often thought to revolve primarily around ethical matters, the work currently being carried out in animal studies shows just how broad and rich the conversations in the field have become in recent years. The books reviewed here range across a wide number of themes, including ontology, politics, economics, ethology, history and activism. The principles of selection informing the texts reviewed include: (1) choosing monographs that make an important intervention in existing debates relevant to critical and cultural theory, and (2) highlighting research that originates from varied disciplines. The reviews are grouped under three main rubrics: 1. Post-Anthropocentric Ontologies; 2. Ethics of Entanglement; 3. Capital and the Politics of Liberation. While scholarship in the field has tended in recent years to split into different theoretical camps—namely, animal studies versus critical animal studies—I have chosen to review volumes from both approaches, as important and excellent work is being done from both angles.
