For a variety of reasons, the field of medieval Hispanic historiography has given rise to great critical interest in recent years. The canonical Alfonsine texts of the late thirteenth century provide the material for most of these studies. The present article aims to provide a revised perspective on the textual relations between the chronicles composed after the Alfonsine example, be they related to it or not, and it suggests that each text deserves its own contextual study in which the degree of similarity to, or difference from, the Alfonsine texts does not play a key part.
