Mobility and interconnection have characterized material and ideational relationships over the last two centuries. For example Rather than being seen as a static set of relations, structures and institutions, society is best understood through the metaphor of flows, movement and networks. Technology and transport play a key role in this, facilitating connections between people and ideas. Yet the contemporary world is also marked by efforts to reinforce national borders and curtail human movement, as recent events in the Middle and Europe attest.
