The research field of Christianity and literature, a subset of the field of religion and literature, investigates the many ways in which Christianity relates to literature. Scholars in the field have pursued many different types of literary-critical inquiry, including but not limited to exploring religious themes and topics in literature, assessing the relevance of authors’ personal religious commitments and practices to their work, speculating about the devotional or possibly sacramental properties of literature, studying the theological implications of literature, and so on. Other literary-critical approaches that are also germane to the larger field of Christianity and literature include political theology, postsecular studies, and postcriticism, to name just a few. In short, the phrase Christianity and literature designates a capacious and longstanding academic field that tries to account for the various ways in which Christianity has influenced, informed, or interacted with literature throughout literary history.
