First a bit of recusatio. There is an important paper waiting to be written about discursive gaps in the dialogues, about those parts of the dramatic space created by Plato of which the dialogues make us aware but say nothing, those parts of the histoire about which the discours is silent. Such a paper might well be entitled ‘Silence in the Platonic Dialogues’. There is another paper by the same title about the silent onlookers in the dialogues, those figures of whose presence we are made aware, but who say nothing in the course of the conversation.
