This study is the first comprehensive curricular comparison of graduate arts management programs in the United States. Its principal finding is that there exists considerable curricular convergence among arts management programs and that their differences may be exploited strategically. Through extensive curricular analysis and in-depth conversations with faculty, this study makes both conceptual and methodological contributions to the field—conceptual because it provides an empirical basis for the definition of arts management as a formal academic discipline in its own right and methodological because it proposes a framework to effect a systematic comparison of arts management program curricula. Keywords: arts management curriculumcontent analysiscurricular designhistory of arts managementresearch methods Notes 1. For the purposes of this essay, the terms "arts management" and "arts administration" are used interchangeably, although a lively debate has long taken place in the field over the appropriateness of each term. For thoughtful discussions of different aspects of this particular issue, see Dewey (Citation2004), DeVereaux (2009a), Ebewo and Sirayi (Citation2009), Kirchberg and Zembylas (Citation2010), and Kuesters (Citation2010). 2. Several of the arts management program directors interviewed for this work recalled the eight foundational programs being begun as a result of being approached by the National Endowment for the Arts to develop more formalized higher education programs for managers of the arts. 3. For reasons of space (and to provide a somewhat more interesting narrative), the Methodology section as rendered here is a summarized version. A full description of coding criteria, program listing, content analysis, etc., is available upon request. 4. Research methodology is offered as a required course by 47.7 percent, human resources by 36.4 percent, and technology by 34.1 percent of all analyzed programs. 5. From the five programs that do not require a marketing course, four offer marketing at least as one elective.
