This chapter analyzes the private orations of Themistius, focusing on his rhetoric of praise. It highlights Themistius' belief that the truths of philosophy need to be broadcast widely and that rhetoric was the chief instrument for accomplishing this. It stresses the need to accept the fact that panegyrics were a fact of life in the fourth century in order to better appreciate the many uses to which ancient orators could put the rhetoric of praise and the skill with which he could adapt it to a particular situation.
