Wordsworth’s early poetry proposed to resolve the crisis initiated by the collision between the Scholastic system of natural philosophy and the Enlightenment. The lingering presence of the long tradition of natural philosophy revealed in the Dream of the Arab, the trapping and the skating scenes from the Prelude, and “Resolution and Independence” offers evidence of a deep historical patterning present not only in his work but in Romanticism generally.
