Im Alltagsverständnis ist Normalität ein selten hinterfragtes Deutungsmuster. Es wird wie selbstverständlich davon ausgegangen, dass normale Handlungsweisen oder Personen von solchen unterschieden werden können, die in irgendeiner Weise außergewöhnlich, unpassend, störend, irritierend usw. sind. Normalität kommt dabei meist als Negation, als Feststellung von Abweichung, zur Sprache: „Das ist doch nicht normal“, oder „So einer wie der ist doch nicht normal“.
