This chapter analyses the formal structure and general characteristics of nationalism as a territorial ideology. It describes the typologies based on nationalism's relationships to states and whether it defined the boundaries of the state or simply helped to unify the territory within existing state borders. The boundaries of national territory staked out with cultural 'markers' but just as economics is not a sufficient basis for a lasting class alliance, so culture on its own is not a sufficient basis for territorial delimitation. Drawing on Weberian and Marxist theories, nationalist ideology is related to territory in terms of politics and statehood and the more abstract temporal and spatial structure of the ideology, and then, more concretely, in terms of social classes and economic and cultural development. Here the creation of a national community is often partly the work of national liberation movements in opposition to the colonial state power, but even in these cases the state provides the initial territorial context.
