Of all German historians of the nineteenth century none established as close a relationship between history and politics as did Heinrich von Treitschke (I834-96). His lectures were noted for their political diatribes, and he acquired nation-wide fame through the articles and editorials he wrote for the monthly Preussische Jahrbiicher. From 1871 to I884 he also served as a Deputy in the Reichstag. Moreover, with the exception of his magnum opus, German History in the Nineteenth Century, none of his writings were mainly historical. Even that latter work was not simply a 'history'. Its purpose, clearly political, was to provide the young German Empire with a firm historical basis. This it sought to accomplish by conveying to its readers a sense of pride in their past and an appreciation of the Prussian-led unification that established the Reich.
